Commemorations

Each year, the Netherlands war cemeteries in Indonesia become the setting for three key commemorations. These ceremonies, thoughtfully organised by the Netherlands Defence Attaché’s Office in close collaboration with the Netherlands Embassy in Indonesia, serve as a bridge between past and present. Our collaborative efforts reflect a shared dedication to honour and remember, and to learn from the stories of those who rest here, ensuring their legacies continue to inspire future generations.

27 FEBRUARY

The Battle of the Java Sea

Every year on 27 February, Kembang Kuning war cemetery in Surabaya hosts the commemoration of the Battle of the Java Sea, one of the most significant naval battles in the Pacific during the Second World War in Indonesia. This ceremony, conducted in English, honours the memory of nearly 2,000 Allied sailors who lost their lives in 1942, including those aboard three Dutch naval ships: HNLMS De Ruyter, Java, and Kortenaer.

At the centre of the ceremony stands the monument to Dutch Rear Admiral Karel Doorman, who commanded the combined Allied fleet and went down with his ship. The commemoration brings together international representatives, families of war victims, and the public to remember their sacrifice and reflect on the human cost of war.

4 MAY

Remembrance Day in the Netherlands

Every year on 4 May, the Netherlands observes Remembrance Day (Dodenherdenking), a national day of reflection to honour civilians and military personnel who have lost their lives in wars and peacekeeping missions since start of the Second World War, both within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and abroad.

In Indonesia, these ceremonies are held at the war cemeteries of Menteng Pulo and Kembang Kuning. Conducted primarily in Dutch, they form part of this national moment of reflection. In alignment with the traditions of Remembrance Day, people come together to pay tribute to the sacrifices made for freedom, ensuring that the lessons of the past remain a guiding light for future generations.

15 August

The Cessation of the Second World War in Asia

The 15th of August marks the Cessation of the Second World War in Asia and is observed with ceremonies at Menteng Pulo, Kembang Kuning, as well as other Netherlands war cemeteries in Indonesia. These commemorations have an international character and are conducted in English, allowing for broader participation.

The day not only serves as a moment of remembrance for those who suffered and died during the war, but also highlights a spirit of international reflection and unity. Representatives from various countries, along with families of war victims and members of the public, gather to honour a shared and often painful history.

This is the largest annual commemoration held at the war cemeteries in Indonesia, offering a space for collective remembrance across generations and national boundaries.
