Commemorations

Each year, the Dutch war cemeteries in Indonesia become the setting for three key commemorations. These ceremonies, thoughtfully organised by the Netherlands Defence Attaché’s Office in close collaboration with the Netherlands Embassy in Indonesia, serve as a bridge between past and present. Our collaborative efforts reflect a shared dedication to honour and remember, and to learn from the stories of those who rest here, ensuring their legacies continue to inspire future generations.

27 FEBRUARY

The Battle of the Java Sea

On February 27th, Ereveld Kembang Kuning hosts the commemoration of the Battle of the Java Sea, an annual remembrance conducted in English. This day is dedicated to the memory of the nearly 2,000 allied forces lost, including those aboard three Dutch naval ships. The monument to Dutch Rear Admiral Karel Doorman stands as a poignant reminder of their sacrifice, with the ceremony welcoming international representatives, family of war victims and the general public to honour their legacy.

4 MAY

Remembrance Day in the Netherlands

The 4th of May is observed as Remembrance Day, a solemn occasion to honour civilians and military personnel who have lost their lives in armed conflicts or peacekeeping missions since the start of the Second World War, both within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and abroad. Our ceremonies at Ereveld Menteng Pulo and Ereveld Kembang Kuning, conducted primarily in Dutch, are part of this national moment of reflection. In alignment with the traditions of Remembrance Day, we come together to pay tribute to the sacrifices made for freedom, ensuring that the lessons of the past remain a guiding light for future generations.

15 August

The Cessation of the Second World War in Asia

On the 15th of August, we solemnly commemorate the Cessation of the Second World War in Asia with ceremonies held at Ereveld Menteng Pulo and Ereveld Kembang Kuning, as well as other war cemeteries. These commemorations have an international orientation and are held in English. This day extends beyond the boundaries of remembrance to embrace international unity, with representatives from various nations joining to honour the shared history and sacrifices.

The 15th of August commemoration is the largest commemoration of the year, not only welcoming international representatives but also family of war victims and the general public.
